Mechanisms & concepts
Explore chemical families, biological targets, enzymes, and exposure contexts. Shared concepts connect the substance library to the evidence.
Acetylcholine
The endogenous transmitter at nicotinic and muscarinic receptors.
Adenosine
A neuromodulator involved in sleep pressure and arousal.
Adenosine antagonist
Blocks adenosine receptor signaling.
Adenosine receptors
Receptors activated by adenosine; caffeine antagonism changes signaling without removing the physiological need for sleep.
Age context
Age-defined study groups can differ in drug disposition. Age associations need study-specific interpretation.
Amino acid derivative
A chemical grouping, not a shared claim of cognitive benefit.
Antihistamine
Compounds that inhibit histamine receptor signaling. Receptor selectivity and additional actions differ across drugs.
Behavioral sleep–wake scheduling
Scheduled sleep and waking behavior used alongside a study treatment. Combined-treatment findings should retain this context.
Choline precursor
A compound supplying choline through metabolism. This biochemical relationship does not itself establish a cognitive outcome.
Circadian signaling
Signals associated with the timing of sleep and waking.
Clinical psychological support
Preparation and support supplied within a clinical research protocol. Findings from that setting do not establish outcomes of unsupervised exposure.
CYP1A2
A liver enzyme important in caffeine metabolism; activity varies with exposures and physiology.
CYP2A6
An enzyme with an important role in nicotine metabolism.
Dopamine
A neurotransmitter whose extracellular availability is influenced by dopamine transporters. Increased signaling is not a universal benefit.
Dopamine transporter
A membrane transporter involved in dopamine reuptake. Human PET studies can measure occupancy without establishing general cognitive benefit.
Energy buffering
Supports the creatine–phosphocreatine system in tissue energy metabolism.
Histamine
A signaling molecule acting at histamine receptors; effects depend on receptor and tissue.
Histamine H1 receptor
A histamine receptor targeted by H1 antihistamines; distinguish it from muscarinic receptor activity.
Hormone
Endogenous signals that can also be administered as products.
Methylxanthine
A chemical family that includes caffeine.
Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors
An acetylcholine receptor family distinct from nicotinic receptors. Antagonism can reduce secretions and produce other anticholinergic effects.
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
Ligand-gated receptors activated by acetylcholine and nicotine. Receptor subtypes and desensitization affect the response.
Nicotinic agonist
Activates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.
Psychedelic
Compounds that can produce substantial changes in perception and experience.
