Altered perception
Changes in the character of sensory experience.
Anxiety and jitteriness
Uncomfortable arousal or unease reported after exposure. The experience depends on dose, sensitivity and context.
Craving
An urge to use a substance; with nicotine dependence it may appear during abstinence and be temporarily relieved by renewed exposure.
Daytime sleepiness
A reported tendency to feel sleepy during waking hours. Adverse-event reporting is distinct from an objective sleep-latency test.
Drowsiness
A subjective tendency toward sleep. Reports of drowsiness and laboratory performance can diverge.
Subjective alertness
A reported sense of being awake and responsive. It can change independently of objective task performance or later sleep.
Wakefulness
The experience of being awake rather than sleepy. Reported wakefulness is distinct from performance and measured ability to remain awake.
